Not All Manuka Honey has the Special Property

Not All Manuka Honey has the Special Property - Helping you Identify that special Manuka Honey from New Zealand

Bees gather manuka honey from the nectar of the flowers of the manuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium), a native plant which grows in the remote unspoilt areas of New Zealand.

Some manuka honey has a unique natural property with unique attributes.

The reason why only some manuka honey has the special property is not yet known.  It could be from a sub-species of manuka or due to some environmental factor such as soil type.

Until recently consumers had no way of knowing the level of quality or authenticity of the Manuka Honey they were buying.  Depending on the season and the source, honeys can vary in grade and quality.  So it was important to establish a trusted quality standard.  The UMF Honey Association has achieved this by introducing the UMF quality trademark.

UMF stands for "Unique Manuka Factor" and identifies the small proportion of Manuka Honeys that contain the special property.

The UMF designation and grading is a highly sought-after and well-respected quality trademark that producers are proud to display on their label.

The UMF Honey Association utilises a range of internationally recognised biological and chemical test methods in approved laboratories both in New Zealand and internationally.  Should a particular batch of Manuka Honey comply with the rigorous standards set out by the UMF Honey Association, it is awarded the UMF mark and a number (grading).

As part of the UMF Honey Association's testing process every batch of honey must also go through a series of supporting programmes to ensure the ultimate in authenticity, quality and safety.

All UMF licensees are independently audited to meet stringent standards in terms of production, manufacturing, sampling and handling. So when you see the UMF quality trademark and logo you can be sure you are buying the best, 100% natural, unadulterated Manuka Honey.

The UMF rating indicates the quality of the honey after the honey has been packed in New Zealand.   Honey not packed in New Zealand does not have a UMF grading.

Manuka Honey with high UMF grading is recognised as having special attributes.
